Life Lessons from Prince

Prince’s transition was so much more than the loss of a person. It heightened the awareness of his impact on the world and led me to a place of reflection.  As a poet and someone who colors outside the lines, hearing and seeing Prince made me realize I wasn’t alone in being a little different…a little weird.

His music and artistry taught me much about life—what is and what was to come.

“The beautiful ones, they hurt you every time
Paint a perfect picture
Bring to life a vision in one's mind
The beautiful ones
Always smash the picture
Always every time” ~The Beautiful Ones

“'Cuz in this life
Things are much harder than in the afterworld
In this life, you're on your own” ~ Let’s Go Crazy

“Women not girls rule my world

I said they rule my world
Act your age, mama (Not your shoe size)
Not your shoe size” ~ Kiss
“How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that's so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (She's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry” ~When Doves Cry
