Foodie Friday: Broussard's Cajun Cuisine

Part of Feasting on the Divine is enjoying delicious food! You know those dishes where the first bite takes you to a happy place and sometimes even cry a little on the inside? Oh you don't? Okay maybe it's just me!

Once a month, I'll share a new dining delight. I hear you saying, "Well, what about fitness, Trinka?" I know. I know. However, it would basically be sacrilegious for a Georgia girl NOT to indulge in great food. As Blanche would say, "it would be simply unsouthern." (true fans will know her). Besides if fitness is a lifestyle, you shouldn't deprive yourself. Enjoy it and exercise even more to burn it off! Soooo, in a way, it's like motivation. Yeah, motivation...

Okay so where did I feast this month? My niece Chelsea (over on Contemporary Teal #plug) suggested it for lunch one day. Her mother and I drove over to Cape Giradeau, Missouri to visit her, and we decided to dine at Broussard's Cajun Cuisine!

A cozy restaurant with lots of character, Broussard's is over 25 years old. Right away I love two things about this Cape Giradeau charm: 1). It's not part of a chain. 2) Behind the building is the Mighty Mississippi River!

We were greeted with smiles and sat in the bar area while we waited for our table. Looking around you could see people from all walks of life--families, couples, young and old. And the smell? Intoxicating! I was so ready to eat. Thankfully, our wait was less than 10 minutes. Even though the "joint was jumping," our server was pleasant, courteous and knowledgeable of the menu. (It's just a quirk of mine when a server has no clue about the menu.) She even gave me tips on how to eat crawfish, but I wasn't feeling brave enough to order them that day.

Our lunch selections were:

Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Skins
Shrimp Creole
Fried Catfish-pic courtesy of Broussard's

Annnnnd there may have been some Shrimp Etouffee on the table. Annnnd there may be a reason why I had to "borrow" pics from Broussard's to show you what the entrees looked like. Annnd we'll just leave it at that! The food was wonderful!! We even had leftovers to enjoy later.

This Georgia girl is thankful the Broussards had the vision to bring the art of southern cuisine to the Midwest. Kudos to the owners that have upheld the legacy and spirit of the restaurant!  I will definitely visit again soon! It's worth the 2-hour drive. Plus my niece is there! Sorry about that honey! You're worth the 2-hour drive. *hehehe*

Blessings for Obedience: Deuteronomy

created by photovisi.com
The following verses are always great motivation for me. Reminders of God's goodness and love. No, I wasn't always obedient, and I'm not perfect now.  However, these days I make a greater effort to follow and live by my Father's guidance.

In case you need a reminder today (or if this is brand new for you), please meditate on the following verses and pray for Holy Spirit to give you understanding. Obedience has its rewards and your heavenly Father is waiting to bless you!

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.

7 The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.

8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. (Deuteronomy 28: 1-12 NIV)

Be blessed!

Inspiration from T. D. Jakes

In June, I posted the following on my Facebook page:

We are conditioned to think the "promised" or "abundant" life referenced in God's Word is about monetary gain.  Although financial security is a part of that life, it is so much more!

The promised abundant life I'm enjoying and nurturing each day (to the best of my ability) involves peace of mind, good health for my family, friends and myself. My life is filled with laughter, fellowship with lovers of God, the blessing to share love and time by serving others. I rejoice because I can go to bed and wake up knowing all my needs are met! You see I've HAD a Paul-season! *wink* (Philipians 4:12 AMP)

The promised and abundant life is available to EVERYONE and God's promises are shared in His Word!  It may take us a while to discover them as I share in After the Sixth: Notes from a Spiritual Journey, but when we're ready, they are there for us to learn, embrace and see them manifest in our lives!

So what is the "work" you ask? It may be different for you. My work includes/included healing soul wounds (deep work there), forgiving, studying God's word, seeking God through prayer/worship/meditation for His guidance and instructions for my life. I took some spiritual growth courses that have changed my life! And on that one day of rest? It's not really rest.  Spend time praising your Father! Thanking Him!

Now these are just the thoughts and opinions of one person. This is how I feast on God's divine Word. Again, your experience may be different, but I do pray you HAVE an experience and taste and see that the Lord is good!!

Getting Out of the Gym: Workout Alternatives

Today is cardio day! I'm headed to the gym shortly. Actually, it is a beautiful day outside, and I could walk around the neighborhood but to the gym it is!

This leads to today's topic--workout alternatives. Honestly, with the fall temps moving in, I will strive to do more outdoor activities. However, what are some other workouts I can incorporate?

Yes, the #fitlife journey is fun and makes me feel great. Now I'm looking for some new ways to stay active. Zumba is on my list. Enjoyed it in the past!

I've recently started thinking about yoga. (Now that I know it's not just for skinny people. just being honest about my past ignorance. lol)

Your help is much appreciated. What are you doing to stay fit? I welcome your suggestions on some new alternatives. Thank you! Oh and any yoga fans with suggestions for beginners?

Tasty Tuesday: Latin Burgers

Welcome to the first installment of Tasty Tuesday! I'll showcase a recipe I've tried and loved. Let's feast!

Latin Burgers with Caramelized Onion and Jalapeno Relish and Red Pepper Mayonnaise

Courtesy of the Cooking Channel ~ Click here for recipe.
A small party in your mouth! Es muy delicisio! Rachel Ray taught me to view recipes as foundations. You can substitute ground chicken or turkey. I've tried both. Onion rolls and portabello mushroom caps instead of hamburger buns. Experiment and let me know what you think. Oh! Try the mayo on sandwiches! Also, the relish is a great topping for other dishes.

Book Review: Rethinking Green Smoothies

If you would have asked me a few months ago to drink a green smoothie, the answer would have been no. Really? Who can get pass the color?

Fast forward  to July and I'm introduced to JJ Smith, the name behind the New York Times Best Seller 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse. My coworker tells me how great she feels and her weight loss has jump started. Over on the Facebook page, there are even more testimonies and pictures attributed to the Green Smoothie cleanse.
Courtesy of JJSmithOnline
Ms. Smith believes "the first step in losing weight is detoxification" which is the premise of the book, and the main reason why I decided to try it. Here are other claims stated on her website:

The 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse will help you:

      • Lose 10-15 pounds in 10 days
      • Get rid of stubborn body fat, including belly fat
      • Drop pounds and inches fast, without grueling workouts
      • Learn to live a healthier lifestyle of detoxing and healthy eating
      • Help your body naturally crave healthy foods so you never have to diet again
      • Receive over 100 green smoothie recipes for various health conditions and goals

So what do I have to say about all these claims and hundreds of people singing its praises? They were right! Wow! My energy levels went through the roof--not a jittery high or anything but natural energy. I'm a Ben & Jerry's fanatic but I haven't craved sugar since ending the cleanse approximately one week ago. My endurance during my workouts is awesome. Okay I've shared this pic everywhere. Lol I was doing 1-3 miles before the cleanse. Look at the display now:
Yep! That's 6.01 miles.
The book contains the specific recipes and shopping list for the 10-day plan and then tons of education to help you foster a healthy lifestyle. You'll really enjoy the smoothie recipes for health conditions and goals. No, I didn't lose into the double digits, and it wasn't my goal either. I feel invigorated and have a new perspective on healthy eating!

Get the book! Try it and come to your own conclusion.
